Jan Allmon

Born and raised in Pennsylvania Dutch country, Jan developed a love for art at an early age. Pursuing her passion for art and specifically painting, she received a BFA degree in art and design from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. She has also studied with master artists Don Stone, Tony Couch, Tom Lynch, Donald Allen Mosher, TM Nicholas and Maggie Siner.

Reflecting on what inspires her, she says it is transforming a painting into an emotional experience. She believes that happens when the subconscious mind takes over and time is forgotten in the process. Adding that an artist can plan for a well-balanced and harmonious composition with the academics of a good painting in mind, but interpretive spontaneity is what makes it a personal journey.

She and her husband have owned several art galleries. In 1988, they opened Gallery on the Green in Woodstock, Vermont. It became one of New England’s favorite destination galleries, featuring the work of professional artists throughout New England. Jan’s paintings were exhibited exclusively there for almost twenty years. They opened a second gallery in 2003 in Williamsburg, Virginia. Returning briefly to Ohio in 2008, Jan had her own fine art studio and gallery featuring her paintings. She also offered private art lessons.

Now residing in central Virginia, she exhibits her work regionally at fine art venues and shows. She is a past member of American Impressionist Society, Oil Painters of America, and Virginia Artisans and is a current member of the James River Art League.
